Fibromyalgia

Since 1997 Fibromyalgia has been reported to be the second most commonly diagnosed musculoskeletal disorder (the first is osteoarthritis). It has been estimated that 3.4% of women and 0.5% of men in the United States have this syndrome. The most common symptoms reported by people with fibromyalgia include widespread pain (on both sides of the body and in the upper and lower halves of the body), sleep disturbances, extraordinary fatigue, and morning stiffness. It is important to note that fibromyalgia is not a life-threatening syndrome and that while no cure is known at this time, individuals can take control over the condition by making sure that they have medical practitioners that understand the syndrome. Research has shown that participation in a regular program of guided exercise can result in a reduction in the number and intensity of tender points as well as improving sleep, physical functioning, and overall quality of life. It should be understood that an individual with fibromyalgia must be cautious about the exercise programs in which they choose to participate. Physical therapists, especially those with specific training in women’s health issues and chronic pain, are well-equipped to assist a person who wants to gain control over fibromyalgia.
